Use size 3 or 4 needles. Either knit in garter for a thicker
fabric or knit in stockinette. The thumb can be knit in garter or reverse
stockinette. Knit the last stitch and the first stitch. Any yarn is fine, but I
like sock yarn or yarn with a tight twist for an elastic fit.
Either cast on with your favorite co or with waste yarn if
you want to graft at the end.
CO 50 stitches (or more if you want longer wrists)
K garter for 20 ridges or three inches.
Put 12 stitches on a holder at the beginning of the 21st
row and then knit that row through to the end.
Knit back to the last live stitch and start short rows.
K 1 st for selvage and pull tight. K2 w&t knit back to
edge.
K1 K4 w&t knit back to edge
K1 K6 w&t, etc. until you have knit 12 short row cycles.
Now decrease your number in reverse (i.e. K1 K10 w&t
until you are back at k1 k2…)
When you are at the top of your three stitches slip the 12
held stitches onto a needle and continue to the top of the mitt again being
sure to snug up the stitch at the top of the thumb or you may have a gap.
Knit back to wrist and continue another 19 ridges or three
inches.
I like to use a crochet hook to join the last live row with
the cast on row for a small seam or you can pull your waste yarn and graft the
stitches.
Do the same for the second mitt. These are great stash
buster gloves and lend themselves well to asymmetry and flashy striping. I got
the idea from a self striping yarn book called “Not Just Socks” and just
perfected them for better fit and tighter selvedges. Love the idea and they are
simple to make.
Enjoy them.
